The Life and Times of Edward Manet

Edward Manet was 16 years old when he joined a training ship bound for Rio de Janeiro. The next decade of his life is spent typically doing those things that a 19th-century artist would do. In 1859, Manet presented a work modeled after the style of the great Spanish master Diego Velasquez. A piece called The Absent Drinker shows the artist delving headfirst into that modern obsession, the street.
