The Trauma of Enclosure

We went from what was called the open field system, where by and large people farmed in strips as part of a big social organism. What enclosure does then is kind of override the open fieldsystem - gather together lots of those strips into one place to plan a really great massive hedge. The whole kind of diversity of culture of English ruralism got squashed literally into the monoculture that's almost replicated in the field behind the hedge. That's why we have so much Hawthorne on a platform around the country.
