The Story of the Academy
The academy was originally created as a strike breaking organization. So the screenwriters guild said, let's form a union. Let's get better pay. And then Louie B. Mayer gathered together some, let's say people that were very sympathetic to the studios and they called it the academy. If there's any problems with negotiations or with your pay, then you can go to this group called the academy and they will mediate for you. We don't need a union. You know, we're a group.
