Immigration Politics of the Late 20th Century
As immigration increased in the late decades of the 18 hundreds, so did resentment and anti immigration sentiments. This eventually led to policies aimed at reducing immigration by especially targeting people that they didn't want to admit into the country. In 18 90, en the us Surgeon general called tracoma, quote, a dangerous contagious disease. The examination process itself was painful and not at all sanitary, which probably led to further spread of tracoma.
