Ants can measure distance by counting the number of steps they make. At least one species of ant does this, and that's pretty well the only way it can make a good assessment of how far it's gone. They have really, really tiny brains, about a quarter of the size of a bee brain,. These little ants are examples of very small brains with very good counting abilities.
