David Frum: People debate how much of this is actually Lewis. He says Tolkien had already grieved the loss of his mother at a very young age, and then he just lost his father when did his father pass away? In 29, shortly before Lewis himself returned to the faith. Right. And I'm sure he went through a slightly different grieving process with his father. But it's not like he had never experienced the loss of someone close to him. Not to mention his comrades on the front. Exactly.
