The Importance of First Settlement Effects
The first group of people who settle an area successfully and create a self perpetuating society will have an outsized influence on the future direction of that society. Over three generations, the culture tends to win out. The tragedy of the African American experience writ large is that they weren't allowed to participate in the dominant culture as equals.
