Alzheimer's and Excitotoxicity
Alzheimer's patients have 30-fold more incidence of epileptic seizures. The amyloid protein as it accumulates can render neurons vulnerable to excitotoxicity and aging itself. Only drug prescribed for Alzheimer's patients that has any effect is a drug called memantine, which blocks a certain type of glutamate receptor.
