The Struggles of Press Freedom

The Washington Post was punished briefly but very notably, inserting sponsored links to Amazon content within its books and movie reviews. NPR was rewarded for making its understanding of location look like Facebook's understanding of location. The book shows how seemingly idiosyncratic incidents are evidence of larger challenges to press freedom. So my hope is that readers take away from the book two things: a skepticism about the idea of press freedom, looking at it in historical context; also an excitement about the promise of press freedom as a tool for thinking about what public life can mean.
