The idea that e-rv's are evidence for evolution is "stupid beyond love," says David Frum. Erv comparisons can be done entirely with the DNA of living organisms, just as DNA can tell us that two people are siblings, even if the parents are no longer alive. So too, erv's identify common ancestry, even if that ancestor is long gone. For this debate, we're going to be agreeing to an original designer of life.
