The most important part of Roman society, really. The land-owning class of plebeians had to serve these long-terms of military service,. Long campaigns prevented them from tending their farms which fell into disarray and ceased to be profitable. Over time, rich patricians and equestrians would then take advantage of their economic plight by adding it to their massive holdings. Many became land-less pro-letarians, either forced to emigrate to Rome or wandered the countryside as jobbers.
