After taking agregantum, the romans now effectively controlled two thirds of sicily. But carthaginian strongholds on the west coast were impregnable. The spartan phalinx could not be beaten on land, but the athenians dominated the water. Neither side risked total defeat by challenging the other on their home field. A decisive spartan victory at sea finally put an end to the long war.
