In 633, the Muslim caliph Abu Bakr decided to expand further. He created an army with multiple corps and assigned each one a talented commander. The largest of these corps was placed under none other than Khalid ibn al-Walid. "I think that this man, from a military perspective, was perhaps one of the best field commanders," he says.
