Mean streets, mean streets is Scorsese's own investigation of his faith. I think about Ingmar Bergman saying he lost faith at eight, but didn't know it until 1962. He says any self-reflective person who struggles with religion has wanted that. The idea of what does life mean and the meaning of life is this whole theme of the movie.
