For most of us, it's usually not a failure to get in enough electrolytes. The other two are number one, you are trying to run something that is just simply too long or difficult for you. So if you only ran 16 miles as your longest run in training and then you start cramping at mile 19 or 20 in the marathon, I'm going to put my money on the fact that you're simply not well trained for what you're attempting to do.
