The Secrets of Elizabeth's Network for Message Delivery
Elizabeth Van Luz developed a network for delivery. She would take messages from the prison to her house, often hiding them in a hollow figurine next to her fireplace. In addition to the prison, she would get messages that were gleaned from other servants or enslaved people in other households. Having this information, the union army was able to get people in to get some of those prisoners out.
