In a way, i think this great tide of stuff became so important that it overtook the conventional ideas about monuments. It is a very curious fact that at a period when architects were absolutely brilliant at doing neo classical triumphal arches and obelisks there was no monument to the battle of waterloo itself. Who would have decided which monument should go up at waterloo? And also, in a monument at waterloo itself, the fact that the event is maybe just too big to be reduced to a monument, to a building.
