The Effects of Chlorine on Hair

In the 80s, there were several studies done on how halogenated molecules like chlorine interact with the keratin fibers within hair. At a high pH, chlorine is pretty much does nothing to hair or skin. But when you're at a pH of around seven, which is what pool water is, it's like 7.4 to 7.8 according to Google. The main reason for these changes is that in this neutral pH, we have these disulfide bonds in our hair. These are oxidized and converted to systaic acid in chlorine conditions.
