In 1983, a listeria outbreak in Canada tied to contaminated coleslaw was the one that really solidified food as a source of the pathogen. In 1999, a US-wide outbreak involving 101 cases and 21 deaths linked to hot dogs stopped listeria from dropping further down on the foodborne priority list.
