In 1983, a listeria outbreak in Canada tied to contaminated coleslaw was the one that really solidified food as a source of the pathogen. In 1999, a US-wide outbreak involving 101 cases and 21 deaths linked to hot dogs stopped listeria from dropping further down on the foodborne priority list. Listeria monocytogenes can also tell us about things like surface cell proteins, signaling cells and innate immunity.
