And Hobbes comes along in the 1650s and says, well, maybe the way to think about society is as a balance of forces. So rather than having this kind of wonderful sort of hierarchical notion of the body and the body politic as revolving around one sun-like heart object, all you've got is this sort of ticking clock now that's operating.
