The Importance of Metaphors in Society

In the 1620s, you have Harvey writing about the king. He dedicates his word to the king and says my work is also going to underline just how important you are to the body politic. And Hobbes comes along in the 1650s and says, well, maybe the way to think about society is as a balance of forces. So rather than having this kind of wonderful sort of hierarchical notion of the body and the body politic as revolving around one sun-like heart object, all you've got is this sort of ticking clock now that's operating.
