The Importance of Central Planning

Alan Johnson is working on a new book, economists in the Cold War. He says it's about World War II through to 1970 when things like game theory become terribly important. It comes together right at the end in 1971 in Santiago, Chile with General Pinochet coming in and turning it from extreme socialist to extreme capitalism. And that's a sort of bringing together of that big ideological debate. I shouldn't say bringing it together. It throws it apart really. But it's a very interesting period where this threat of war sounds fascinating.
