The Norman Invasion of England
Castles are a fixture of life in medieval France, but until now have hardly featured at all in Britain. Castles originate in Western Europe around the turn of the First Millennium. They differ from what had gone before by virtue of being private. Earlier fortifications were designed to protect hundreds if not thousands of people.
