There's a connection between smell and the sense that we're going to talk about soon, which is tasting. Arguably there are five basic tastes: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami. And with taste, that's pretty much what you taste, but what smell does is smell gives you flavor. A really fun way to try this is if you taste something like a jelly belly, plug your nose, put a jelly belly in your mouth; then when you unplug your nose, it will sort of burst into a distinctive flavor.
