Octavius and the Pagan Critics of Christianity
In the third century, Marcus Menusius Felix wrote a fictional dialogue called Octavius. The non-Christian is attacking Christians for their lack of images and worship. He says they're counterfeit images of Christ rather than true images of Christ. But by the middle of the third century when this dialogue was written, Saint Cyprian of Carthage was writing about priests at Christian altars.
