Rome was ideally placed to mediate between the coast of the Tiberian Sea and the hilly inland regions of Central Italy. Salt extraction, particularly in the now drained lagoons that dotted the shore, were a booming business from the Bronze Age onward. The archaeologist Gabriela Chifani argues that by the beginning of the Iron Age, the city had already been functioning as a gateway community for centuries.
