The Paradox of Intellectuals

The distinction between disseminating ideas and making an original contribution to a body of scholarship is very blurry. Historically, you would have had to prove that you did the latter before you did the former. But now that's no longer a requirement because of increased access to channels of information. So if we define the intellectual as expertise plus publicness, it's not in the academy anymore.
