Having Been Butler in Portant Command Helps Lincoln Win the German American Vote
The campaign out in the shenandoah valley is entrusted to a german born general named franz zigel. The command of this smaller expedition along the james river goes to a real american born guy named benjamin butler. Both guys performed at the level we've come to expect from political generals, and thus both subsidiary campaigns were complete failures. And soa, these two subserio campaigns that had the potential to help grant a lot, they're out. So now it's going to be all in grant and the army of thepotomac, which he is not commanding, but he is supervising.
