The United States has 16 species of ash trees, genus Fraxinus. In the early 2000s, ash was one of the most common species in the Midwest. Ohio alone had an estimated 4 billion ash trees; 300 million ash lined the streets of Michigan. The valley referred to as brown ash in Maine, is a key stone species that grows in forested wetlands.
