Grant Grant: A Person of His Time
During the Civil War, that four year period, you see a rapid change of people who might have been ambivalent towards race. He capitalizes like most political politicians at the time of the African American vote and those leaders and communities because they want to be elected to office. They're willing to make concessions. And Grant is one of these people who's a person of his time, but reflects the nation from attitudes of race. The war transform him in a way that he softens his views and attitudes as willing to do some things but not others.
