The carman describes the coronation as the point when williamqt discarded the title of duke to be made a king. But looking at the choices made for this ceremony, i think william had a much larger par ambition. The crown, the opulence, the staging, all of it tells us this coronation wasn't just a ritual to grant william authority or an attempt by archbishop eldred to get the normans to stop committing mass murder. Now, this was a ritual to mark the break from the past and to start a new era, a year zero, not just for william, but for england. And so inside the abbey, everything was arranged
