The escape artist in question is rudolph verber, who succeeded in breaking out of auschwitz. Verbe was brave and resourceful, but getting people to believe tested him as life in ashwitz itself never had. It's because we would rather be happy in our ignorance than sad in our wisdom, that most of us walk away. By the time the mariner is finished with him, he is in no mood for partying.
