Fiona Liu: I'm always fascinated by the complexity of identity, particularly in a global context. As soon as I started delving into Taiwanese identity, it became particularly exciting for me because of the complexity that Taiwanese identity, you know. In some ways there was a distinct way of being Taiwanese and yet is also Southeast Asian. It's got a very distinct history of colonization, not just by the Chinese, but by Europeans and Japanese. The Y Shenron are people who came over in the late 1940s after the communist victory on the mainland. And they have this difference that I talk about in my book because that it's still relevant between the Y Shenron and the Benshengran
