The Difference Between Black Understandings and White Understandings
Baldwin was struck by how weak he perceived white people to be. He saw in this older black man, again, a resiliency, a strength that has allowed blacks in the south to survive a horribly unjust system of racism. In one chapter of your book, David, you examine Steven Spielberg's film, Amistad, in relation to a novelization of that film. Can you describe what you see as a difference between the way the novel turned out and the way the film turned out?
