The Rise and Fall of Ralph Burch
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, San Francisco was a hotbed of private detection. Lipstick wanted to create space for himself in this crowded market. He employed an in-house electronics technician who would fashion eavesdropping devices. The two of them would record his clients or their enemies for whatever reason they wanted him to. In 1965 he testified before Congress holding a martini glass in his hand as if drinking from it.
