The Three Sages Who Cultivated Different Virtues

Confucius was the sage who was timely. Timely in the sense he could adjust himself circumstantially to be one or other of those virtues, depending on whether they were needed in that moment. The metaphor that's carried through the end of the paragraph is musical. So maybe the individual sages are like rhythm, harmony, and beat. And Confucius is the one who brings them all together into a full song.
