The Fear of Death
The phrase afterlife is nonsensical and has no meaning once you investigate it. People were monstrously discomforated by the sense that they had not lived up to what was entrusted to them. A deathful bit culture has no intent when it comes to dying except to forestall it as long as possible. The idea of this thing that has been temporarily forestalled does not produce euphoria or any kind of enduring blistering insight because you're on the receiving end of now.
