The Sub-Churches of Secular Fundamentalism
In the absence of religious faith, people in their desperate need to structure an external authority will come up with the environment, nature, and so on. And when it comes to nature and the environment, our comfort, our safety, and even our survival has to be thrown into doubt as long as we can placate the God of nature. These are various sub-churches in the church of secular fundamentalism, which requires sacrifice just as surely as the God of the Old Testament requires sacrifice.
