Halden's Night Shift

Her two most important novels were set in war time factories. Badly paid and mostly unthanked, night shift takes us inside the nocturnal lives of working class women who make camera parts for war planes. You can tell that holden had worked in such a factory herself. The way you know people at work is different to ordinary life. Here, new kinds of human connections and narratives must be invented from scratch. It's precisely that jaggedness that holden is after, and she knows it will take all her craft and wit to capture it in prose.
