There are in excess of 40 million Americans living in poverty. The federal government spends $250 billion a year to $1 trillion trying to alleviate poverty, he says. There is no line item on the federal budget that says welfare spending,. It's a whole bunch of programs that some of which arguably maybe don't apply exclusively to the poor and maybe we shouldn't count them, right?
