Did Champolion Succeed Where Others Don't?

In France a young man named Jean-Francois Champolion had been working on the decipherment for some time. He was shocked and devastated by the news, all his hard work and for nothing. Soon after he received more accurate information, that while some sounds for different symbols had been plausibly decoded, the language itself was still unreadable. So why did Champolion succeed where others didn't? Was it inspiration or perspiration? Or did luck play a role?
