In 1984, Rachel Pugh had recently started working for a local paper called The Wilmslow World. A man cutting peat that day spotted what he thought was a piece of wood. When he cleaned it off, he saw that it had toenails. Peat is a spongy layer of soil found in wetlands. It forms when dead plants don't fully decompose. If cut and dried, it can be used as fuel.
