The Importance of a New History

I think there's a lot of path dependence, but societies also change. I suggest that we don't really have good generalizations about that. Like here's an example: Barbados or Mauritius are two of the world's most successful societies economically in the last 30, 40 years. How did they do that? There's a very interesting essay by Orlando Patterson,. But it's not very much about the specifics of Barbados and Beijing culture and institutions.
