The Rise and Fall of the Yeoman Class
In the late 1300s, some peasants acquired sizable estates. These were the peasants who became known as yeoman. Yeoman were free peasants who worked their way up the social and economic ladder by purchasing and leasing lands from other peasants or from manor lords. They had a degree of freedom that the poorest peasants didn't have.
