The Role of Stereotypes in Group Cohesion

Do stereotypes also serve other social functions? Like for example, if we share common stereotypes with a group of people, are we signaling something or not? I do think that you could make an argument that a shared stereotype could improve group cohesion. But I'm not familiar with research done on that. It certainly may exist, but I'd be really interested to know if it promotes group cohesion.
