The Vestal Virgines of Rome
The Vestal Virgines were chosen for their role between the ages of 6 and 10. They would begin a 30-year service to Vesta, the goddess of the hearth. Most of their time was spent retrieving water from a sacred spring. The authorities had to get creative with how to punish those who broke their vow.
