I was just reading sandra richter's epic of eden. She does a lot of historical background work to understand the story in the terms that it was written. And she talks about encountering the bible as a cross cultural experience. We're reading an ancient document written in another culture. The categories we're going to encounter there, the way of life, its cross culture. Even if i don't understand what that culture is like, just the fact of understanding it is different than mine. Athing with that helps me so much.
