Narcissus was a young man who lived how the story goes. He saw his own image in a pool of water at a time, but they didn't have mirrors at the time. The story goes that he fell in love with himself. My view is that actually a better translation of the story is that he became obsessed with himself. And that, to me, signals the beginning of the human ego. It is to have a mental image in your head, ultimately, not out there. That's just the story.
