CHAPTER

What's the Problem With Nuclear Fusion?

In 1934, Rutherford and a couple of people in his laboratory were carrying on with this kind of smashing on quite rudimentary equipment actually. They put one unit of energy in and two deuterium atoms. And in a successful reaction, what they found was that they were able to transform that into a heavier hydrogen atom and a proton - four units of energy. But most of them weren't successful. In fact, only one in a million of these were successful. Einstein said the likely hood of transforming matter into energy is like shooting birds in the dark in a country where there are no birds.
