The Cost of Zoning in America

Zoning is really trying to do two things. Segregate uses and restrict densities. And essentially put our cities in a straight jacket saying exactly what you can and can't build on every single parcel in the city. In many cases these rules were written decades ago and reflect a very different view of what a city can and should look like. If we're going to build a sustainable future talking about how we build our cities is absolutely essential to that. We need rules to make sure that growth is coordinated with new infrastructure. It's not an argument against landies planning it's an argument against the way we have operationalized it in the US which is zoning.
