Stalin beat Trotsky to the top job through a combination of trickery and ruthlessness. By 1929 Stalin had established himself as the supreme leader of the party, dictator of the Soviet Union. With political infighting behind him he began to focus on domestic policy. He put into place huge national initiatives to grow and modernise the economy. After a promising start it became clear that these plans were terribly flawed. The central planning and collectivisation of this period caused food shortages and famines.
